SOFIA - PopupNewton.jpg

Join us for the Opening Event kicking off a month-long artist residency hosted by the SOFIA/c (South of Fraser Inter Arts collective).

We will be activating the Pop Up space in Newton with an exciting array of artistic events, workshops, collaborations and artists-in-residence from August 6th through the 26th.

Events include:

August 6-8:
Interdisciplinary artist Charis Au will create a multisensory interactive performance involving the culture around food. This event will coincide with the Farmer’s Market on August 6th.

August 10-12:
Interdisciplinary artist Roxanne Charles will be working on a blanket with community involvement to engage in a discussion about the importance of women in indigenous communities. This discussion will acknowledge the historical, systematic, domestic, and lateral violence against indigenous women. Through this collaboration in making, Roxanne Charles looks at culture as a means of healing and women as a crucial part of the healing process.

August 17-19:
Puppeteer and video artist Edward Westerhuis will be doing a 3-day artist residency where he will be building cardboard puppets for an upcoming performance. The residency will culminate in an informal cardboard “building jam” where participants can hang out and make work together. [event invite]

August 20:
A Space to Sit and Think is a roving journaling workshop. In the Newton PopUp edition, join writer and facilitator Taryn Hubbard for a 90 minute session of journaling exercises and prompts. Bring a pen, and some paper if you like–but all supplies will be provided. Light refreshments will be provided. [event invite]

CLOSING EVENT – August 26: New media artist Matt Smith will set up a DIY laser-show lab. During his artist residency he will be working on an upcoming project. The public is welcome to connect with Matt and hang around for a participatory demo and some inspiration. [event invite]

Month-long:
Interdisciplinary artist Polly Gibbons will be doing an artist residency where she will be continuing an ongoing series of watercolour paintings. The public is invited to help create a collaborative painting that will develop over the course of the residency.

SOFIA/c active space at PopUp Newton at 137st 72a Avenue, Surrey, BC is open from August 6 to August 26, Wednesday to Sunday, 12pm-4pm.

Walk Ways at Arbutus Gallery

Edward Westerhuis & Taryn Hubbard in collaboration with Carmen Papalia

This past spring Taryn Hubbard and Edward Westerhuis went on a walk each through Whalley/City Centre, in Surrey BC with Carmen Papalia. During these walks Carmen invited Taryn and Edward to explore these neighbourhoods non-visually (with eyes closed), and supported them as they navigated by sound, touch, smell, memory, and environmental design

Inside/Out: Convergences of practice and community

A full-day artist symposium at Surrey Libraries Central City

To build on the ongoing ideas and discussions sparked throughout the SOFIA Collective’s Edge City Cultural Event Series, Inside/Out: Convergences of practice and community opened the floor for a discussion with artists on how they engage community in their personal practices as well as how community organizers work to create new and unexpected spaces for events, happenings, and art making.

We finished our first year of collective programming

Crowd at Inside/Out

Thank you to everyone who came out and supported the Edge City Cultural Event Series

SOFIA/c’s first year of programming wrapped up on Aug. 23 at the end of its summer symposium, Inside/Out: Convergences of practice and community.

Over the course of 18 months, in addition to the full-day artist symposium, we also held a poetry reading, film night, and a mobile text art piece. Check out the archive for details and photos of these events.

Stay tuned for our upcoming 2014/15 programming, which will explore the theme of Duality, in the weeks and months to come.
